UJC Hong Kong

About the UJC

Founded in 1988 to give non-Orthodox Jews in Hong Kong a spiritual home. We are still the only Progressive congregation in the city.

The United Jewish Congregation of Hong Kong was founded in 1988 to advocate for Reform, Liberal, Conservative and other non-Orthodox Jews in Hong Kong, and to bring them fully into Jewish life. We remain the city’s Progressive congregation: egalitarian, English-speaking, and unusually international even by Hong Kong’s standards.

Our members come from North America, Britain, Israel, Australia, South Africa, Europe and across Asia. Some have been here for decades; many are here for three years with a posting and a young family. Both kinds of member built this place.

What Progressive Judaism means here

Women and men participate equally in every part of worship and governance. Interfaith families are full members of the community. LGBTQ+ Jews and their families are welcome without qualification. We take Jewish text and practice seriously and treat individual conscience as part of that seriousness rather than a threat to it.

Clergy

Rabbi David Kudan leads worship, teaching and pastoral care.

Cantor Yvon F. Shore is our cantor and Director of Education and Programming, and leads Shorashim and b’nai mitzvah preparation.

Governance

The congregation is run by an elected Executive Committee drawn from the membership, with a small professional office team. Members elect the committee at the annual general meeting, and any member can stand.

Where to find us

We share the Jewish Community Centre at One Robinson Place in Mid-Levels. The office is the fastest way to reach anyone — clergy included.
