Shorashim
Our religious school for children aged 2 to 13 — Sunday mornings, Hebrew, holidays, and a path to b'nai mitzvah.
Shorashim — roots — meets on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am during term. Children from two years old through b’nai mitzvah age learn Hebrew, holidays, stories, ethics and song, in small groups, taught by faculty who know them by name.
What the morning looks like
The youngest children do holidays, music and play. Older groups add Hebrew reading, Torah narrative, and the beginnings of liturgy. Teenagers who have had their b’nai mitzvah often come back as madrichim — classroom assistants — which is how a good number of our teenagers stay connected.
Registration
Registration for the year opens in the spring, and families are welcome to join mid-year if there is space. Tuition is charged per child with a discount for siblings; materials are billed separately. Membership of the congregation is required for enrolment.
Register online, for one child or several at once. To arrange a visit, write to the office — you are welcome to sit in on a Sunday before deciding.
B’nai mitzvah
Preparation begins roughly eighteen months before the date and is built around the individual child: Torah and Haftarah portion, a d’var Torah they write themselves, and a mitzvah project. Families work directly with the cantor.
