Worship & Study

Shabbat every Friday evening, Torah on Saturday mornings, and the full turn of the Jewish year — with classes for those who wish to engage more deeply.

This week

Full calendar
  • Shabbat service

    Friday, 7:00 pm

    Next on 13 November

  • Torah study

    Saturday, 10:00 am

    Next on 31 October

  • Shorashim

    Sunday, 9:30 am

    Next on 1 November

Arrive a few minutes before the hour. There is no dress code beyond what you would wear to dinner, no ticket, and no expectation that you can follow the Hebrew — the prayer books carry transliteration and translation on facing pages, and someone will find you a seat.

You do not need to be a member, or Jewish, or expected. Come as you are.

What a Friday evening is like

Our rabbi and cantor lead the service in Hebrew and English, with a great deal of singing. It runs a little over an hour.

Afterwards there is kiddush — wine, challah, and the part of the evening where people actually meet each other. Nobody will ask you to introduce yourself from the front.

Saturday mornings

Saturday belongs to Torah study: a text, strong coffee, and a genuine argument. No preparation, no Hebrew, and nobody is called on.

Several times a month there is also a Shabbat morning service, usually when a young person in the congregation becomes bar or bat mitzvah. Visitors are welcome at those too.

Both are on Zoom as well as in the room. Write to the office for the link.

The turn of the year

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the fullest services of our year. Visitors are welcome — write ahead so we can plan seating.

Across the rest of the year: a sukkah on the terrace, dancing with the Torah at Simchat Torah, candles and too many doughnuts at Hanukkah, costumes and noise at Purim, a community seder at Passover, and cheesecake and night-long study at Shavuot. Dates move with the Hebrew calendar, so the calendar is the thing to trust.

Marking a life

Baby namings, b’nai mitzvah, weddings, conversion and funerals.

For any of these, write to the office and the clergy will be in touch directly. These conversations do not belong in a form.

Adult learning runs year-round. Everything here is open to members and visitors alike; write to the office to join any of them.

Torah Study

Saturdays, 10:00 am · In person and on Zoom

We read the week's portion and argue about it. No preparation, no Hebrew, and nobody is called on.

Introduction to Judaism

Wednesdays, 7:30 pm · On Zoom, from October

A year-long course on belief, practice, text and history — for anyone considering conversion, for interfaith couples, and for Jews who were never taught.

Hebrew for adults

By arrangement · At the Centre

Prayer-book Hebrew for following a service, and conversational Hebrew for going further. Classes run when enough people want one.

The Bookhers

Monthly, evenings · In person and on Zoom

A long-running group reading Jewish fiction, history and memoir. The list is set by whoever argues hardest for their choice.

Come to a service before you decide anything

No ticket, no membership, no need to tell anyone you are coming. If you would rather be expected, write to the office and someone will look out for you.
